What is engine oil used for?
Engine oil is an essential part of your car's operation. When your car is running, the constant movement of parts and their contact with each other causes unavoidable friction which, without lubricant, would be unbearable for you and your vehicle.
In this respect, engine oil has several essential roles:
- Firstly, it lubricates the moving parts and makes them move more easily and make contact more fluid.
- As it flows through the engine's curves, the oil also has the virtue of absorbing and dispersing the heat produced by the combustion of the fuel and the mechanical work of the various engine parts.
- By lubricating the various parts, the oil prevents unpleasant nuisances such as vibrations and noise resulting from the friction between the parts.
- Finally, the friction between the parts leads to wear of the parts, which erode a little more with each contact, leaving fine particles of material. It is these particles that the oil is responsible for collecting to prevent them from accumulating and clogging the engine in an undesirable place. The engine oil carries them to the oil filter, where they are retained and through which the oil is cleaned and can once again play its role in the engine.
Why change my engine oil?
For all drivers, it is necessary to check their oil level regularly and even to change it at each oil change. There are several reasons for this, but they all serve to ensure the smooth running of your vehicle.
As you can see, the engine oil flows between the parts and allows them to function smoothly and without hindrance. However, with use, oil consumption reduces its reserve level and the remaining oil is increasingly polluted by the dirt it brings back.
As far as oil cleanliness is concerned, although the oil filter plays an essential role in ensuring that the oil does not have to be changed too often, it is still important to ensure that the oil is clean and healthy. This is why an oil change is scheduled, during which the entire oil in your car is changed.
Even though it is not compulsory, it is recommended that you have your oil filter changed at the time of the oil change. As we have seen, the oil filter collects the waste products drained by the engine oil. As time goes by, the filter becomes dirty and loses its effectiveness. To ensure that the oil remains healthy and that the oil filter is not too clogged with dirt, it is best to change it regularly, especially at the time of the oil change.
Another important point to watch is that the oil level must remain sufficient to play its role. If the oil level is too low or too low, there is a serious risk of engine failure. To preserve the life of your parts and limit their wear, it is essential to keep your oil level above the minimum dipstick!
Finally, if your car is used for sport, it may be worthwhile, or even essential in the case of motor sport, to switch to a specialist oil that is better adapted to the needs and requirements of such vehicles and engine conditions.
Why choose Red Line oils?
Red Line has over 40 years of expertise in the field of automotive oils and lubricants. Initially focused on the motorsport market, the California-based company has gradually expanded to include consumer products, building on the work it has done on advanced motorsport oils.
In formulating a 100% synthetic motor oil, Red Line has opted for the most advanced technology in the industry, with synthetic formulations offering ten times the performance of hybrid oils. This synthetic formulation is based on the natural properties of esters, which are organic materials with particularly developed lubricating characteristics.
Intended for use in racing, circuit racing and rallying, Redline's High Performance oil is renowned for its excellent anti-wear properties. With its ability to reduce friction under a wide range of operating conditions, this oil is ideally suited for use in competition.
The high detergency of Red Line High Performance Oil also offers longer life and provides increased cleanliness. High temperature stability and oxidation resistance are improved and hot metal lubrication is much better than with other synthetic products.
If you already have oil in your vehicle, don't worry: Redline is fully compatible with other synthetic and conventional motor oils.
What type of motor oil should I choose for my car?
Redline motor oils are available in different viscosity grades to best suit your needs.
The viscosity index is made up of two numbers separated by a W, the number on the left indicates the viscosity level of the oil when cold, the number on the right indicates the viscosity level when hot.
Red Line offers many oils ranging from 0W20 to 20W50 or 10W60.
Oils with lower viscosity levels are those that promote engine performance while those with higher viscosity levels provide better reliability. Oils with medium grades are the perfect compromise between performance and reliability.
Another factor to consider when choosing your oil is that if your engine is subject to rapid dilution of the oil in the fuel, you should look for oils with the highest viscosity grades. On the other hand, if your engine is subject to low dilution of the oil in the fuel, you can go for the oils with the lowest viscosity grades.
