What role do brake discs play?

Brake discs are located at the end of the brake chain. When the driver presses the brake pedal, he releases brake fluid throughout the braking system and thereby communicates his desired braking level to the calipers. Upon receiving the brake fluid, the brake calipers tighten to translate the braking demand into a physical phenomenon. The movement of the calipers brings the brake pads into contact with the brake disc. Their contact causes friction which slows down the rotation of the brake disc and by extension the wheel.

The discs and pads are therefore the most exposed parts of the braking system. It is recommended to change them regularly and, for vehicles used for sports, to equip them with adapted material having a better resistance and greater longevity.
