What is the purpose of a dump valve?
The dump valve is a component that controls the boost. When your turbo is running at high speed and providing boost, it cannot stop or even slow down quickly because the intake system is still full of pressurised air.
Since the pressure cannot go anywhere, it is forced back into the compressor where it tries to turn the impeller in the other direction, producing a pressure spike that is harmful to the compressor.
The relief valve is mounted on the intake pipe and contains a spring-loaded diaphragm or piston that lifts when it senses a pressure increase. This allows air to be vented into the engine compartment and produces a distinctive "popping" sound.
