What is the role of a limited slip differential?
The purpose of a limited slip differential is to redistribute engine power to the drive wheel with the most grip on the ground. This results in a better overall grip of the vehicle in curves and therefore in less understeer for a front-wheel drive vehicle (or four-wheel drive vehicle) and less oversteer for a rear-wheel drive vehicle. This means that it is now possible to take corners at greater speed with the help of increased grip and to gain valuable lap seconds in races.
Why change the differential?
Limited slip differentials allow you to achieve much better performance compared to cars using a so-called "open" differential as they are often originally designed. Thanks to their limited slip technology, they do not lock up and instead manage to allow acceleration by giving the vehicle more grip. This is decisive in races, especially on the circuit, where it is possible to gain about one second per kilometre driven thanks to the higher speed of the curves.
